Chickasaw Bluff Sand Ridge Historic Military Circuit

Civil War earthworks meet sand ridge technical.

Moderate

The Confederate earthworks that crown Memphis’s Chickasaw Bluff still scar the landscape 160 years later, and this circuit follows the old military roads between Fort Pickering and the outer defense lines. You’ll negotiate sandy ridges where Union gunboats once anchored below, threading between oak groves and crossing seasonal creeks that bisect the bluff system. The route passes the historic Chucalissa archaeological site before climbing to Defense Ridge, where cannon positions still command views across the Mississippi bottomlands.

This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD for the loose sand sections and creek crossings, though stock vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions. Spring through fall offers the best driving, but summer heat can be brutal on these exposed ridges. No permits needed for the public sections, though respect private property boundaries. Pack water — none available along the route. The payoff is stepping into Memphis military history while testing your rig on terrain that’s tougher than most expect this close to downtown.
