Cherokee Path Historic Trading Post Circuit

Colonial trading route through Cherokee territory

Moderate

The Cherokee Path was the Interstate 85 of the colonial era — a major trade corridor linking Charleston to Cherokee territory in the Blue Ridge foothills. This backcountry circuit follows remnants of that ancient highway through York and Cherokee counties, connecting historic trading posts, ferry crossings, and frontier settlements along the Broad and Catawba rivers. The route hits Nations Ford on the Catawba River, where treaties were signed and goods exchanged for centuries, then climbs into the rolling Piedmont where old wagon ruts still scar the landscape.

Moderate difficulty with some technical creek crossings and steep climbs through eroded hollows — definitely 4WD territory when wet. The route mixes paved county roads with forest service tracks and private timber roads, so check access before heading out. Spring and fall offer the best conditions and wildflower displays. No formal camping along the route, but several state parks provide base camps nearby. It’s a deep dive into Carolina backcountry history, following trails worn smooth by Cherokee feet and colonial wagon wheels.
