Flume Trail — Lake Tahoe East Shore Historic Water Route

Tahoe from above, the way the miners saw it.

Moderate

The Flume Trail on Lake Tahoe’s east shore sits on the Nevada side near Incline Village and follows the general corridor of the historic V-flume that once carried timber from the Carson Range down to the Comstock Lode mines. The overland and high-clearance route climbs from the Tunnel Creek staging area off NV-28 onto a series of decomposed granite double-track roads threading through ponderosa and Jeffrey pine above the lake. At certain points the elevation drops away sharply east toward the Great Basin and opens west to Tahoe at its most photogenic — sapphire water, Sierra ridgeline, the whole postcard. The junction at Marlette Lake is a critical waypoint and a solid turnaround for rigs not committed to the full loop descent back toward Spooner Summit.

This is high-clearance territory rather than full technical 4×4 — a capable SUV with skid plates handles it in dry conditions, but the loose granite and occasional embedded shelf rock will punish low-clearance rigs and bald tires. Snow closes the upper sections from November through May and can linger into June on north-facing slopes. No permit needed for vehicle access but Spooner State Park charges a day-use fee at the south approach. Fuel in Incline Village or Carson City. Water at Marlette Lake is untreated — bring your own. The views alone justify every mile of dust.
