Wrigley Road — Highway 1 Junction to Wrigley Village

Dead-end Mackenzie Valley road most overlanders skip.

Moderate

Most drivers blow past the Wrigley Road junction on Highway 1 without a second thought. That’s a mistake. The 57-kilometre spur drops off the Mackenzie Highway northwest of the Liard-Mackenzie confluence and winds through boreal lowlands and muskeg to the Dene village of Wrigley (Pehdzeh Ki) on the east bank of the Mackenzie River. The road is maintained gravel but rough — frost heaves and drainage problems are year-round features, not seasonal exceptions. A free government ferry crosses the Mackenzie to reach the community itself from late May to mid-October; outside that window, ice thickness dictates whether you wait or cross. The Mackenzie Valley views from the river approach are legitimately stunning — wide, braided river channel backed by blue-grey boreal ridges as far as you can see.

The Wrigley Road is passable in a capable high-clearance 2WD on a dry summer day, but 4WD gives you the margin you want after rain when the shoulders go soft. Fuel stops don’t exist on this spur — load up at Checkpoint or Fort Simpson before committing. Cell service evaporates about 5 km past the junction. The community of Wrigley is small and private; travel with respect, keep noise down, and don’t camp within the community boundaries without permission. Best season is late June through September before freeze-up makes the ferry run uncertain. The reward is standing at the edge of the Mackenzie River knowing you’re at one of the most remote road ends in North America.
