Haines Junction to Kathleen Lake — Dezadeash River Valley Loop

Sitting at the convergence of the Kluane Ranges and the St. Elias Mountains, this loop punches out of Haines Junction on the Dezadeash Lake road and works south through open river flats and boreal forest toward Kathleen Lake inside Kluane National Park. The Dezadeash River crossings in the low flats can flood significantly in early summer, and the soft silt benches along the river’s braided channels have swallowed vehicles that got too exploratory. Kathleen Lake itself is one of the most scenic campsites in the entire Yukon — glacier-fed turquoise water ringed by peaks — and it’s the turnaround point before looping back north on the improved gravel toward Haines Junction. Watch for grizzlies on the river flats; this corridor is active habitat.
This is a Moderate run for most of the season, bumping to Difficult in early summer when the Dezadeash floods its banks. A stock high-clearance 4×4 handles the route fine in July and August. Kluane National Park requires a backcountry permit if you’re camping inside park boundaries at Kathleen Lake. Day-use is free. Fuel up in Haines Junction before departure — no services on route. Cell service drops out immediately south of the junction. The payoff is pure Kluane: massive peaks, wolf and bear sightings, and a lake that looks photoshopped into the landscape.

No — there is zero fuel or resupply along the loop and cell service is completely absent the entire route. Top off in Haines Junction before you leave, carry more fuel than the math says you need, and treat or filter water from the river rather than counting on potable sources.
