Kananaskis Valley — Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park Loop

Kananaskis backcountry at its honest best.

Difficult

Pull off Highway 66 west of Bragg Creek and you’re already in another world. The Elbow-Sheep Wildland loop stitches together logging-era roads, old range trails, and creek-bottom two-tracks through some of the most underrated terrain in Kananaskis Country. Volcano Creek crossing is the gatekeeper — a rocky, shin-deep ford that filters out the timid early in the route. From there the track climbs past Junction Hill toward the Sheep River drainage, rewarding you with open ridgeline views and the kind of silence that costs nothing. The loop returns via McLean Creek OHV area, one of the few places in the province where you can legally play in the mud without side-eye from rangers.

This is a legitimate high-clearance route — don’t attempt it in anything less than a lifted 4×4 with a locker. Spring runoff turns Volcano Creek into a washing machine; late July through October is the sweet spot. McLean Creek has pit toilets and designated camping; the wildland section is dispersed. No permits required but carry a paper topo — cell service drops out completely past the Elbow Falls trailhead. Bragg Creek is your last fuel stop. Budget a full weekend to do it right.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle this trail, or do I actually need a locker?

A stock rig will struggle — the rocky creek crossings and loose shale climbs will have you high-centered or spinning out without a locker and meaningful lift. Minimum is a lifted 4WD with a locking differential, front or rear. Skid plates are not optional here.

When does the trail typically open in spring and is it rideable into fall?

July through October is the reliable window. Spring snowmelt keeps the creek crossings dangerous and the soft ground badly rutted well into June. Snow can return by late September at elevation, so don't push October without checking the forecast hard.

Do I need a permit to run this loop or camp in the Elbow-Sheep Wildland?

No vehicle permit is required to drive the trail, but a Kananaskis Conservation Pass is mandatory for anyone stopping, parking, or camping in Kananaskis Country — it's $15/day or $90/year per vehicle. Rangers do check. Get it at alberta.ca before you leave home.

What's the hardest section on this loop and what should I actually be ready for?

The creek crossings are the honest crux — water depth varies with season and recent rain, and the rocky creek beds are uneven enough to twist a wheel fast if you're moving sloppy. The rocky climbs on the fire road sections demand careful line choice. Take your time, walk crossings before you drive them.

Is there any gas or water resupply on the loop, and how far out from Bragg Creek do I need to plan?

Zero resupply once you leave Bragg Creek — no gas, no services, nothing. Top off in Bragg Creek before heading in and carry extra fuel for the full 109 km plus contingency. Water is available from streams but filter everything; cattle graze parts of this area and giardia is a real consideration.
