Cheakamus Lake Forest Service Road

Alpine wilderness minutes from Whistler village

Moderate

The Cheakamus Lake FSR cuts deep into the Coast Mountains north of Whistler, winding through towering Douglas fir and crossing multiple creek beds that’ll test your clearance. This 28-kilometer route starts at the Cheakamus River bridge and climbs steadily through active logging areas before hitting the technical section around Kilometer 18, where rock gardens and tight switchbacks separate the casual drivers from the committed. The road dead-ends at Cheakamus Lake, a glacial tarn sitting beneath the Fitzsimmons Range.

This is moderate to difficult territory requiring solid ground clearance and low-range capability. Expect mud in spring, dust clouds in summer, and active logging traffic on weekdays. Best tackled May through October when snow clears the upper elevations. No permits needed, but fuel up in Whistler and pack extra water. The payoff is legitimate alpine solitude just an hour from the Sea-to-Sky Highway, plus dispersed camping spots overlooking one of the region’s most pristine lakes.
