South Fork Mountain Road
Volcanic rock gardens with Mount Adams views
The South Fork Mountain Road (Forest Road 23) cuts a rugged line through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, climbing from the Cispus River valley to high ridgelines with commanding views of Mount Adams’ southern face. This 26-mile technical route follows an old logging road that was abandoned in the 1980s, leaving behind washouts, rock gardens, and steep grades that’ll test your rig’s articulation and your nerve. The most challenging section comes at Chambers Lake, where loose volcanic rock and tight switchbacks demand careful line selection.
This is serious backcountry territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with low range and aggressive tread. Summer and early fall offer the best conditions, though snow lingers at elevation well into July. No permits required, but bring recovery gear, extra fuel, and water — cell service is nonexistent. The payoff is worth the punishment: pristine alpine lakes, old-growth forest corridors, and some of the most spectacular volcano views in the Cascades. Plan on a full day for the complete traverse.
