Hoosier National Forest Monroe Lake Peninsula Trail

Technical peninsula loop with creek crossings

Moderate

The Monroe Lake Peninsula Trail cuts through some of the gnarliest terrain in southern Indiana, where 1930s-era logging roads meet modern forest management tracks around the state’s largest reservoir. This 18-mile loop starts at the Hardin Ridge Recreation Area boat ramp and immediately tests your rig with Bean Blossom Creek’s rock-bottom crossing before climbing through dense hardwood forest on loose limestone. The highlight comes at mile 8 where you’ll navigate Devil’s Backbone, a knife-edge ridge with 40-foot drop-offs on both sides and just enough room for one vehicle.

This is solid intermediate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates for the creek beds and decent approach angles for the limestone shelves. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when water levels are predictable and the canopy provides relief from Indiana’s brutal summer humidity. No permits needed, but dispersed camping is available at designated sites along the peninsula’s eastern shore. You’ll earn spectacular sunrise views over Monroe Lake and some of the best technical driving Indiana has to offer without leaving the state.
