Adirondack Park Cold River Road
Follow the hermit's path to forgotten Adirondack wild
Cold River Road pushes deep into the Adirondack wilderness, ending at the former hermitage of Noah John Rondeau, the legendary ‘Hermit of Cold River’ who lived here for decades in the early 1900s. The final 8 miles are rough single-track that’ll test your undercarriage and patience, crossing multiple streams and navigating around blowdown that can block the route for months. The road officially ends at the old Calkins Brook site, where foundations and rusted artifacts mark Rondeau’s winter camp.
Difficulty ramps up significantly after the first few miles — expect deep ruts, water crossings, and sections that become impassable in wet conditions. High-clearance 4WD essential, plus recovery gear and a full-size spare. Best tackled May through September when stream levels drop. No permits required but this is bear country, so secure food properly. What you get is access to some of the wildest country in the Northeast, plus bragging rights for reaching a place most Adirondack visitors never see.
