Adirondack Park Northville-Placid Trail Service Roads
Forever wild roads through America's largest park
The Adirondack Park’s service roads follow the historic Northville-Placid Trail corridor, threading through the largest publicly protected area in the lower 48. These maintained dirt roads access remote lakes like Raquette and Long Lake, crossing the geographic center of New York’s forever wild preserve. The road to Shattuck Clearing offers the most technical challenge with creek crossings and seasonal washouts that separate casual tourists from serious backcountry explorers.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD and mud-rated tires for spring conditions when frost heaves create axle-deep holes. The Adirondack Park Agency strictly regulates camping—stick to designated areas only. Best accessed May through October when seasonal bridges are installed. The reward is exclusive access to wilderness that’s remained unchanged since the 1890s, plus some of the darkest night skies east of the Mississippi. Stock up in Lake Placid or Tupper Lake.
