Hiawatha National Forest 13 Mile Dispersed Area
This popular dispersed area stretches along Forest Road 2276 roughly 13 miles from the Au Train River bridge, offering multiple pull-offs with established fire rings and level spots for rigs up to 30 feet. The river provides excellent fishing and a reliable water source (treat before drinking). Most sites are within 100 yards of the road under mixed hardwood and pine canopy. Expect company on weekends during summer and fall color season.
Access via Forest Road 2276 west from Munising — the first 8 miles are decent gravel, then it gets rougher with some washboard sections. No fees or permits required, but observe the 14-day limit. Best avoided during spring breakup when the road can be muddy and rutted.
