Silver Mountain Fire Tower Access Road

Vertical punishment to abandoned fire tower glory.

Expert

The ghost of Silver Mountain’s 1930s fire tower still commands the highest peak in this forgotten corner of the Ottawa National Forest, reached by a brutally steep logging road that hasn’t seen maintenance since the Civilian Conservation Corps built it. The final two miles climb 800 feet through granite boulder fields and creek washouts that swallow stock vehicles whole. At the summit, twisted steel remains mark where lookouts once spotted smoke across 50 miles of wilderness, while Lake Superior glimmers on clear days.

Expert-level difficulty requires serious ground clearance, aggressive tread, and low-range gearing for the near-vertical rock steps. Locals call it ‘the Stairway to Heaven’ for good reason — approach blocks exist that exceed 45 degrees. June through September only, and carry a winch or come with a buddy. The reward justifies the punishment: authentic Michigan wilderness, zero crowds, and the kind of 360-degree view that reminds you why fire towers existed in the first place.
