Shafer Trail to White Rim Road
Hundred-mile mesa circuit above the Colorado River
Uranium prospectors in the 1950s carved the Shafer Trail’s infamous switchbacks down into Canyonlands, creating what’s now the gateway to the White Rim Road’s 100-mile mesa circuit. The trail plunges 1,400 feet down cliff faces so steep you can’t see the road ahead, then opens onto the White Rim bench where red rock towers rise like ancient cathedrals. Critical waypoints include the Shafer Canyon Overlook descent, Musselman Arch, and the technical Hardscrabble Hill climb that’s stopped many rigs cold.
This expert-level route demands rock crawling skills, underbody protection, and nerves of steel. Stock vehicles can handle most sections, but Hardscrabble Hill requires precise wheel placement and often a spotter. Permits are required for overnight camping, and the route typically takes 2-3 days to complete properly. Spring and fall offer ideal conditions; summer heat is brutal. Carry extra water, food, and spare parts—rescue is expensive and complicated. The payoff is driving through some of the most spectacular desert landscape in North America, where every turn reveals new geological drama.
