The Brandberg Circuit loops around Namibia’s highest mountain through a landscape of granite domes, ancient Bushman rock art, and ephemeral rivers where desert elephants carve paths through mopane woodlands. Starting from Uis, this 380-kilometer route navigates D2342 and D2359 rocky tracks to reach the famous White Lady rock painting at Maack’s Shelter, then continues through Twyfelfontein’s UNESCO World Heritage petroglyphs. The technical challenge comes on steep granite passes and river crossings in the Ugab and Huab valleys.
Difficult rating for rocky terrain, steep gradients up to 25%, and navigation challenges on unmarked spoor roads. Requires experienced 4WD driver with rock sliders, diff locks, and GPS navigation. Carry minimum 60 liters water, spare fuel, and camping gear — nearest services are hours away in Uis or Khorixas. Best season April to September; summer heat exceeds 45°C. Can a lifted Hilux or Land Cruiser 200 handle this trail, or do you need a dedicated expedition rig?
You need a proper 4WD with low range, functioning diff locks, and solid rock sliders at minimum. A stock Hilux with good all-terrain tires can manage, but granite ledge sections will punish anything without underbody protection — a dedicated expedition build is strongly preferred for a 380km circuit this remote.
When is the Brandberg Circuit passable, and what happens if you try it outside the dry season?
April through September is the window. The wet season (October–March) brings flash floods that make the water crossings genuinely dangerous and can wash out tracks entirely — the Ugab and Huab drainages can rise fast with zero warning even when skies above you look clear.
Do you need permits to drive the Brandberg Circuit, and who issues them?
Yes, permits are required through Namibia's Ministry of Environment and Tourism. You'll also need to coordinate access through the Brandberg White Lady Lodge or local community conservancies for portions crossing conservancy land — sort this before you leave Uis, not at the trailhead.
What's the hardest section of the circuit and what specifically makes it technical?
The upper granite approaches on the eastern and southern flanks are the crux — exposed bare rock with steep off-camber shelves, loose decomposed granite over solid slabs, and no recovery room. Wheel placement is everything; one sloppy line and you're on your side with no one coming for days.
Is there any water available on-route, or do you need to carry everything for 3-4 days?
There are seasonal water sources and a handful of springs, but none are guaranteed outside the wet season and none are safe to drink untreated. Carry minimum 20 liters per person plus rig water for cooling — Uis is your last reliable resupply point and the nearest fuel before a very long, very empty stretch.
