East Humboldt Range Wilderness Road

This brutal mountain road punches through Nevada’s most underestimated alpine country, where the East Humboldt Range throws up 11,000-foot peaks that collect serious snow. The route climbs relentlessly from Wells through aspen groves and over Hole-in-the-Mountain Pass, one of Nevada’s highest driveable passes. You’ll navigate boulder fields, stream crossings, and sections where the trail disappears entirely into granite slabs, all while surrounded by peaks that rival anything in Colorado.

Expert-level technical challenge requiring true rock-crawling capability and excellent recovery gear. Aggressive tires, lockers, and armor strongly recommended. The window is short – July through early September only, as snow blocks the high country most of the year. No services within 100 miles of the technical sections. This route rewards experienced drivers with Nevada’s most dramatic alpine scenery and some of the state’s best dispersed camping in pristine cirque basins.
