Massacre Rim Wilderness Access Road
High desert plateau with endless sagebrush vistas.
The Massacre Rim Wilderness Access Road climbs from the alkali flats of the Black Rock Desert to the volcanic rim that defines Nevada’s northwestern boundary with Oregon. This remote track crosses ancient Lake Lahontan sediments before ascending through juniper and sage to reach the 6,500-foot rim overlooking the Warner Valley. The route passes through the old Soldier Meadows Ranch and skirts the edge of the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, where antelope and wild horses still roam.
Easy to moderate difficulty makes this accessible to most high-clearance vehicles, though the final push to the rim requires 4WD during wet weather. Spring and fall are ideal seasons when wildflowers bloom and temperatures stay reasonable. No permits required, but this is true backcountry with no services for 100+ miles. Pack extra fuel, water, and emergency supplies. The reward is endless high desert vistas, complete solitude, and some of the darkest night skies in the lower 48.
