Tugaloo State Park Boundary Fire Road
Cherokee trading paths along the Georgia border
The Tugaloo State Park Boundary Fire Road system traces the original Cherokee trading paths that connected the mountains to the coastal plains, running along ridgelines that overlook Tugaloo Lake and the Chattooga River basin. These gravel and dirt maintenance roads were built in the 1960s for fire suppression but follow much older routes used by Native Americans for centuries. The main loop spans 12 miles through mixed pine and hardwood forest, passing stone foundations from 1800s homesteads and offering glimpses of the lake through the canopy.
Most of this network is accessible to stock SUVs with decent tires, though a few rocky sections and seasonal washouts make high-clearance advisable. The roads can get muddy during winter months, so late spring through early fall works best. No permits required since it’s within the state park boundary, but camping is restricted to designated areas only. Cell service is spotty at best, and the nearest fuel is back in Lavonia, Georgia. Worth it for the solitude and glimpses into South Carolina’s frontier history.
