The route passes through the old Soldier Meadows Ranch and skirts the edge of the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, where antelope and wild horses still roam.
Easy to moderate difficulty makes this accessible to most high-clearance vehicles, though the final push to the rim requires 4WD during wet weather.
