Smithsonian Butte Back Road
High desert crossing through Arizona Strip country
The Smithsonian Butte Back Road cuts across Arizona’s lonely Strip country, connecting Hurricane, Utah with the remote northwestern corner of Arizona. This high desert route traverses BLM land through sagebrush flats and juniper forests, offering expansive views of distant mesas and the occasional glimpse of Zion’s towering walls to the north. The road passes close to the base of Smithsonian Butte itself, a prominent sandstone formation that serves as a landmark for navigation across this sparsely populated landscape.
Most of the route is suitable for high-clearance vehicles, though 4WD is recommended for wet conditions when the clay-based soil becomes treacherous. Best traveled spring through fall, avoiding winter snow and summer heat. No permits needed, but fuel up before starting — services are nonexistent for long stretches. Bring plenty of water and emergency supplies, as help is far away if something goes wrong. This is a genuine backcountry experience through some of the Southwest’s most remote and least-visited country.
