Pineywoods Timber Harvest Circuit
Deep timber country logging road adventure
The Pineywoods Timber Harvest Circuit winds 34 miles through the heart of East Texas timber country, following active and abandoned logging roads that snake between 80-foot loblolly pines and hardwood bottoms near the Neches River. This route connects three historic sawmill sites—including the ghost town of Doucette—via muddy forest service roads that turn into axle-deep gumbo when wet. The challenge comes at Boggy Creek Crossing, where drivers must ford a 30-yard stretch of coffee-colored water that hides cypress stumps and quicksand pockets.
Moderate difficulty when dry, but turns Difficult fast after rain—the clay soil here doesn’t forgive. High-clearance 4WD essential, with recovery gear for the inevitable mud bog. Avoid during hunting season (November-January) and wet periods. No permits required on this network of private timber company roads and county routes. Dispersed camping allowed at old logging landings, but expect company from local hog hunters. Best tackled in late spring when the dogwoods bloom and the clay firms up.
