Sumter National Forest Cassatt Fire Tower Ridge Circuit
Depression-era fire road with granite creek fords.
The old CCC-built access road to Cassatt Fire Tower climbs through mixed hardwood and pine ridges where the Carolina Piedmont starts its roll toward the coastal plain. Built in 1936 as part of Franklin Roosevelt’s forest conservation push, the route follows original survey lines through timber country that fed the sawmills of Kershaw County for over a century. The stone culverts and hand-laid retaining walls still show the craftsmanship of Depression-era work crews, and Cassatt Creek requires a proper ford during spring snowmelt and summer thunderstorms.
Moderate difficulty with rocky sections that’ll test your breakover angle and a couple creek crossings that demand good throttle control. Stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it fine, though aggressive all-terrains help on the wet granite sections. Best run fall through early spring when the creek flows clear and the hardwoods show their colors. No permits required, dispersed camping allowed along the ridge, and you’ll have sweeping views of the Wateree River valley from the old tower foundation. Bring water — the creek’s seasonal and not always reliable.
