East Cross Timbers Iron Ore Heritage Trail

This route traces the forgotten iron mining boom of the 1860s through the East Cross Timbers, where Confederate forces once extracted ore to forge weapons at the historic Jefferson Iron Works. You’ll ford Chambers Creek three times on limestone slabs, navigate through dense post oak groves on original wagon roads, and explore the massive stone ruins of blast furnaces that fed the war effort. The trail connects Corsicana to the ghost town of Eureka, passing through country that looks exactly like it did 160 years ago.

Easy to moderate depending on water levels at the creek crossings. Stock high-clearance handles it fine, though 4WD helps in the sandy creek bottoms after rain. Spring and fall are prime when the post oaks turn colors, but it’s passable year-round. No permits needed on the public sections, but respect the private land markers. Bring your own water and fuel up in Corsicana. You get a genuine slice of Texas history without the crowds, plus some of the state’s best wildflower displays in March and April.
