Big Bend Ranch State Park Sauceda Ranger Station Loop

Deep Chihuahuan Desert mining frontier

Moderate

The Sauceda Loop cuts deep into the most remote corners of Texas, where the Chihuahuan Desert stretches endlessly toward Mexico and the abandoned Terlingua mercury mines dot the landscape like ghost towns. This 35-mile route follows ranch roads established by Mexican vaqueros through ocotillo forests and across arroyos that can flood without warning, connecting the historic Sauceda Ranger Station with primitive camping areas where coyotes sing to the Milky Way. The ruins of the Sauceda Trading Post mark the halfway point, where Mexican revolutionaries once traded ammunition for supplies.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicles and desert driving experience—flash floods, rattlesnakes, and 100-degree heat are real hazards. Best tackled October through March when temperatures drop below survival-threatening levels. Permits required and fuel up in Presidio—there’s nothing out here but 300,000 acres of authentic frontier country. The reward is solitude in America’s largest state park, camping under stars so bright you can read by them, and the knowledge you’ve reached one of the last truly wild places in Texas.
