Isla de Pascua Interior Volcanic Crater Circuit

Few overlanders realize Easter Island hides a legitimate 4×4 network beyond the coastal moai sites. This circuit connects Rano Raraku, Rano Kau, and Terevaka calderas via barely-legal ranch roads that cross the island’s volcanic spine. You’ll navigate by stone markers and GPS through ankle-deep volcanic sand that swallows two-wheel-drive vehicles whole. The route passes abandoned military installations from the 1960s and offers crater rim camping with zero light pollution — just you and the Milky Way 2,300 miles from anywhere.

Difficulty is deceptive — sand driving skills essential, plus navigation confidence since there are no road signs. Rental agencies on the island prohibit this route, so bring your own vehicle on the cargo ferry from Valparaíso. Fuel and water extremely limited; carry everything. Best during the dry season May through September when trade winds keep dust manageable. What you get is Easter Island like the first Polynesian explorers saw it — raw, volcanic, and completely untouched.
