Camino Costero – Chiloé Island Backcountry Loop

Ancient forests and indigenous culture on Chiloé's wild coast.

Easy

The Camino Costero traces Chiloé’s rugged Pacific coastline where few tourists venture, connecting traditional Huilliche fishing villages through dense Valdivian rainforest. This coastal loop starts near Cucao beach and winds through temperate jungle where 800-year-old alerce trees tower overhead and Pacific swells crash against black volcanic beaches. The route passes through Chanquín and Rahue, indigenous communities where locals still build traditional palafitos and harvest cochayuyo seaweed as their ancestors did.

Easy to moderate difficulty with muddy forest tracks that can become challenging in winter rains – high-clearance recommended but not always required. Best from December through April when roads firm up, though expect mud patches year-round in this rainforest climate. Basic supplies available in villages but plan self-sufficiently. What you discover is the mystical side of Chiloé – ancient forests, indigenous culture, and Pacific coastline that feels like the edge of the world, where southern Chile’s Mapuche heritage runs deepest.
