Michaux State Forest Pole Steeple Dispersed Area
A well-established dispersed camping area tucked into mature hardwood forest near the base of Pole Steeple mountain, featuring a dozen scattered sites with existing fire rings and level tent platforms. The area serves as a popular base camp for Appalachian Trail hikers and rock climbers tackling the nearby quartzite cliffs. Sites are separated by dense forest providing good privacy, with most accommodating 2-3 tents or small RVs.
Access via gravel forest roads suitable for any vehicle in dry conditions, but can become muddy and rutted during wet periods. The area sees heaviest use during fall foliage season and hunting seasons when permits are required. No potable water on-site — nearest source is Caledonia State Park 4 miles south.
