Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Miners Castle
These 200-foot multicolored sandstone cliffs stretch for 15 miles along Superior’s shore, stained red, orange, and green by mineral deposits. Miners Castle is the most accessible overlook — a short walk from the parking area to viewing platforms hanging above the lake. The formations change constantly as ice and waves continue sculpting the rock. Summer brings kayakers exploring the sea caves below, while winter transforms the cliffs into ice cathedrals.
Miners Castle Road is paved but narrow and winding through dense forest. The overlook can get packed during peak summer weekends and fall color season. Snow typically closes the road from December through April, though cross-country skiing and snowshoeing access remains.
