Península de Osa Puerto Jiménez to Carate Beach Access Road

Jungle penetration to Corcovado's backdoor

Moderate

The Carate road cuts through the heart of the Osa Peninsula’s remaining primary rainforest, connecting Puerto Jiménez to the remote gold mining beaches that serve as Corcovado’s southern entrance. This 43-kilometer route crosses multiple unbridged rivers including the notorious Río Carate, where timing the tide is crucial to avoid getting swept downstream. The track passes through former gold mining claims where dredges still rust in the jungle, and scarlet macaws nest in beach almond trees that drop coconuts like artillery shells onto passing vehicles.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance 4WD and experience with river crossings. Wet season (May-November) can make river fords dangerous or impossible — locals recommend dry season travel. You’ll need tide charts, recovery gear, and plenty of water since services are non-existent past Dos Brazos. The reward is accessing some of Central America’s most biodiverse beaches and potentially spotting jaguars, tapirs, or harpy eagles. Fuel up in Puerto Jiménez and pack everything you need — Carate has no services except a small pulpería that’s often closed.
