Ruta de los Mármoles Hidalgo Mountain Circuit

Colonial marble quarries in the clouds

Moderate

The ghost town of El Chico marks the start of this technical mountain circuit that winds through centuries-old marble quarries carved into the Sierra de Pachuca. From the colonial mining town of Real del Monte, graded dirt roads climb through pine forests to reach the famous Peña del Aire viewpoint at 10,800 feet, where you can see the entire Tula Valley spread below. The route passes abandoned marble extraction sites where massive white blocks still sit weathering in the mountain air, and connects a series of ejido roads that local miners have used for generations.

This is moderate-difficulty driving that requires high-clearance 4WD for steep rocky sections and loose marble scree. Best tackled April through October when mountain weather cooperates. The circuit can be done as a long day trip from Mexico City, but camping is allowed in designated forest areas with permission from local ejidos. Fuel up in Pachuca or Real del Monte before starting. You’ll get stunning high-altitude views, a taste of Mexico’s mining heritage, and some of the best pine forest camping in central Mexico.
