Ruta de los Volcanes

The Ruta de los Volcanes threads between Mexico’s most famous volcanic peaks, following ancient Aztec trade routes through the pine forests of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. This high-altitude traverse connects the base camps of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl via a network of logging roads and volcanic ash tracks that climb above 12,000 feet. The route passes through the Paso de Cortés, where Hernán Cortés first glimpsed the Valley of Mexico, and navigates fields of volcanic rock and pumice that challenge traction and undercarriage clearance.

Moderate difficulty with high-altitude considerations and occasional loose volcanic surfaces that require momentum and careful throttle control. Any high-clearance 4WD handles the route, but altitude sickness affects some drivers above 10,000 feet. Best season runs October through April when volcanic activity permits access and weather stays dry. Check current volcanic alerts before departing — Popocatépetl remains active. Fill up in Amecameca and carry extra water for the thin air. The reward is Mexico’s most dramatic mountain scenery and a route that connects two of North America’s tallest volcanoes.
