Ruta del Pulque Hidalgo Highland Circuit

Highland pulque route through volcanic maguey country

Moderate

This highland circuit winds through the volcanic hills where maguey agave has grown wild for millennia, connecting forgotten pulque haciendas that once supplied Mexico City’s thirst. The route climbs from Pachuca through pine forests and ancient lava fields, past crumbling stone walls where indigenous families still harvest aguamiel using techniques unchanged since before Cortez. Near Real del Monte, the old silver mining road becomes a rocky technical challenge with steep grades and loose volcanic rock that tests traction control and driver skill.

Moderate difficulty with some technical sections requiring high-clearance 4WD, especially during rainy season when clay becomes slick as ice. Best attempted April through October when roads dry out and wildflowers carpet the highlands. No permits required, but respect private property around working haciendas. The reward is stepping into living history — sampling fresh pulque from century-old tinacals while surrounded by landscapes that inspired Diego Rivera’s most famous murals.
