Ruta del Cañón de Tolantongo Hidalgo Hot Springs Circuit

Hot springs hidden in limestone gorge depths.

Moderate

The descent into Cañón de Tolantongo drops you through crumbling limestone cliffs where steam rises from hidden thermal springs like smoke signals from the earth’s core. This technical canyon route in Hidalgo state follows ancient riverbeds and mining roads past the village of San Cristóbal before plunging 800 meters into the gorge system. The final approach to the resort crosses three creek fords and navigates a narrow shelf road carved into canyon walls where one wrong move means a long tumble into the turquoise pools below.

This is a moderate to difficult route requiring high clearance and low-range capability for the creek crossings and rocky descents. Best tackled during dry season (November-April) when water levels stay manageable and the access road doesn’t turn into a muddy nightmare. Fuel up in Ixmiquilpan and carry water despite the destination’s abundance of it. The payoff is camping beside thermal pools at 1,200 meters elevation, soaking in 38°C spring water while watching canyon walls glow red at sunset.
