Ruta del Mezcal Guerrero Highland Explorer
Extreme mezcal trail through silver mining ghost towns
This challenging route connects historic silver mining towns through the Sierra de Taxco, following precarious mountain roads between traditional mezcal palenques hidden in remote valleys. Starting from Taxco’s colonial streets, the trail climbs through pine forests to reach forgotten mining camps like Real de Limón before descending into agave-filled barrancas where families have distilled mezcal for generations. The infamous ‘Cuesta del Diablo’ (Devil’s Hill) section requires low-range 4WD and nerves of steel—a 15% grade on loose shale with no guardrails and thousand-foot drops.
This is expert-level terrain demanding experienced drivers with modified 4WDs, recovery gear, and satellite communication. Wet season (June-October) makes many sections impassable due to landslides. Best tackled April-May when wildflowers bloom but before rains arrive. No services between Taxco and Iguala—carry 72 hours of fuel, water, and food. What you get is authentic Mexico few tourists ever see: master mezcaleros who’ve never sold a bottle commercially, ghost towns where time stopped in 1920, and camping spots with views across three states.
