Parque Nacional Desierto de los Leones Dispersed Camping

Dispersed Camping

This national park sits at 3,000 meters in the mountains west of Mexico City, offering pine forest camping that feels nothing like the urban sprawl below. The dispersed areas along the access roads provide quiet spots among tall pines with fire rings and basic facilities. Weekends see Mexico City families, but weekdays stay peaceful.

Access via Mexico-Toluca highway, then paved roads into the park. Winter nights drop near freezing — pack accordingly. Rangers patrol regularly and camping fees are minimal. The historic Carmelite monastery ruins make for an interesting walk from most camping spots.
