Ruta de los Volcanes Michoacán Ridge Circuit
Volcanic ridge technical through Trans-Mexican Belt
This high-altitude volcanic circuit cuts across the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt through Michoacán’s rugged pine-oak forests, linking Mexico’s highest peak Pico de Tancítaro (12,664 feet) with the famous Paricutín volcano that emerged from a cornfield in 1943. The route follows old logging roads and indigenous trails across volcanic ridges, with technical rock gardens formed by ancient lava flows and deep arroyos carved by seasonal runoff. The most challenging section navigates loose volcanic scree on the approach to Tancítaro’s communications towers, where even modified rigs need low-range crawling.
This is expert-level terrain demanding high-clearance 4WD with rock sliders and underbody protection — the volcanic rock tears up anything soft. Best tackled May through October when snow clears the upper elevations, though afternoon thunderstorms can turn the clay soil treacherous. No permits required, but bring your own water and expect zero cell service once you leave the main highway. You’ll earn spectacular views across the volcanic field and experience the raw geological forces that shaped central Mexico, plus camp dispersed among ancient pines at elevation.
