Black Bear Pass Technical Challenge

Colorado's most notorious technical descent

Expert

Black Bear Pass drops 1,400 feet down Colorado’s most infamous technical descent, starting at 12,840 feet above Telluride with views straight down to town through your windshield. This one-way-only shelf road demands expert line selection around loose rock steps and exposure that’ll test your nerves — the legendary waterfall crossing at Bridal Veil Falls puts your front wheels inches from a 365-foot drop. Every 4×4 pilgrim knows this route by reputation; completing it earns you serious trail cred.

Expert-level only, requiring modified 4WD with solid skid plates, aggressive tires, and front/rear lockers strongly recommended. July through September is your window — snow blocks access most of the year. No permits needed but check Telluride weather; afternoon thunderstorms can turn exposed sections deadly. Vehicle recovery gear essential; helicopter rescues happen here. What you get is bragging rights to one of America’s most technical passes, epic alpine photography, and the rush of navigating terrain that separates weekend warriors from serious wheelers.
