Poughkeepsie Gulch Dispersed Camping

High-alpine dispersed camping spots scattered along this technical 4WD route between Ouray and Silverton.

Multiple dispersed camping opportunities exist along Poughkeepsie Gulch, a technical 4WD route that connects the Alpine Loop system. Sites are tucked into small meadows and clearings between 10,500 and 12,000 feet elevation. Most spots accommodate 1-2 vehicles with basic fire rings left by previous campers. Water is available from seasonal streams, but treat before drinking.

High-clearance 4WD absolutely required — this isn’t a casual dirt road. Weather changes rapidly at this elevation, and snow can arrive any month of the year. Sites fill up during peak season (July-August) as this route is popular with serious 4WD enthusiasts tackling the San Juan backcountry.
