Alpine Loop Road Dispersed Camping

High-altitude dispersed camping along the historic Alpine Loop with stunning San Juan mountain views and mining ruins.

Multiple dispersed camping spots scattered along the Alpine Loop Road between Engineer and Cinnamon passes at 11,000+ feet elevation. Sites offer panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains with remnants of 1880s mining operations scattered throughout. Fire restrictions typically in effect summer months — bring camp stove. Nights drop below freezing even in July.

Access requires high-clearance 4WD beyond Engineer Pass. Road is rough, rocky, and narrow with steep drop-offs. Weather changes fast — afternoon thunderstorms common. Season runs July through early September only due to snow.
