Uncompahgre National Forest — Animas Forks Dispersed Camp

Animas Forks sits at 11,200 feet where the upper Animas River forks, surrounded by crumbling 1880s mining structures that look like they belong in a Western film set. Dispersed camping is allowed in the wide gravel flats around the historic townsite — a handful of rigs can spread out comfortably, and the creek running through camp is cold and clear. It’s a genuine hub on the Alpine Loop with traffic from both the Silverton and Lake City sides, so weekends in July and August get busy. Early-week arrivals get the place nearly to themselves.

Access from Silverton via CR 2 (Animas River Road) or from Lake City via Engineer Pass. High-clearance 4WD recommended; last miles are rough and rocky. The USFS historic site requires camping setback from the structures. Bring water filtration — creek water needs treatment. Cell service is nonexistent.
