Hyner View State Park Mountain Vista Circuit
Ridge-running to Pennsylvania's premier vista
The dirt road to Hyner View cuts through some of the wildest country in central Pennsylvania, climbing from the Susquehanna River valley through dense hardwood forest to a spectacular overlook at 1,950 feet. The route starts near the village of Renovo and follows old logging roads and seasonal forest tracks through Sproul State Forest, with the final approach requiring careful navigation of loose shale and steep grades as you climb toward the famous hang-gliding launch point.
This is a moderate to difficult route depending on conditions, requiring high-clearance 4WD and good ground clearance for the rocky sections. Late spring through fall offers the best conditions, though winter access is possible with proper preparation. No permits required, and dispersed camping is available throughout the forest. The payoff is worth the effort — Hyner View provides one of the finest panoramic vistas in Pennsylvania, stretching across the Susquehanna River valley and surrounding ridges.
