Sproul State Forest Sand Run Dispersed Camping
Primitive camping opportunities along Sand Run Road and connecting forest roads in Sproul State Forest, some of Pennsylvania’s wildest backcountry. Sites are informal pull-offs with fire rings established by previous campers, most tucked into heavy mixed forest with little visibility between camps. Capacity varies but typically 6-10 vehicles across multiple spots. Dead quiet except during hunting seasons.
Access via Sand Run Road from Route 120 near Renovo – rough dirt with some rocky sections and seasonal stream crossings. Road can become impassable during spring thaw and after heavy rains. No facilities whatsoever, minimal signage. Fire restrictions common in dry periods. Best avoided during Pennsylvania’s rifle deer season in early December.
