Sinnemahoning State Park Fire Tower Road

Climb to Pennsylvania's elk country fire tower

Moderate

Fire Tower Road climbs 800 feet through dense Pennsylvania hardwood forest to the restored Wykoff Run Fire Tower, built in 1930 and still standing watch over 8,000 acres of elk habitat in Cameron County. The 4-mile dirt road starts behind Sinnemahoning State Park headquarters and immediately hits you with loose shale switchbacks and washout sections that’ll test your line choice. About halfway up, you’ll cross Wykoff Run on a sketchy wooden bridge that’s seen better decades, then tackle the steepest section where ruts can swallow a stock truck whole.

This is solid intermediate 4WD territory — not technical enough to break stuff, but rough enough to make you work for it. High-clearance 4WD required, ideally with skid plates for the rock gardens near the summit. Best run in late summer when the road dries out and elk are active in the meadows below. No permits needed, but check with park staff about seasonal closures during hunting season. The payoff is a 60-mile view across the Allegheny Plateau that explains why Pennsylvania’s elk herd calls this remote country home.
