Tasiusaq Sheep Farm Heritage Circuit

Norse ruins and modern sheep farms in green Greenland.

Moderate

The Tasiusaq Heritage Circuit loops through the rolling green valleys of South Greenland where Norse settlers once grazed cattle and modern Greenlanders still raise hardy sheep. Starting from the airstrip at Narsaq, the route follows rough farm tracks past active sheep operations to the ruins at Tasiusaq—one of the best-preserved medieval Norse farmsteads. The circuit crosses several unnamed streams via concrete fords and climbs through mountain passes offering views of the Greenland Ice Sheet’s southern edge and icebergs drifting toward Cape Farewell.

This moderate route requires high-clearance 4WD but remains accessible to well-prepared stock vehicles. Best traveled June through September when streams are lower and sheep are in summer pastures. Fuel available in Narsaq—carry extra for the 85-kilometer loop. Multiple designated camping areas exist near historical sites, though wild camping is permitted. The reward is witnessing how both medieval Norse and modern Inuit peoples adapted to farming in one of Earth’s harshest agricultural environments.
