Narsaq to Igaliku Viking Ruins Circuit
Drive to Viking ruins where Norse bishops once ruled.
This gravel track cuts through South Greenland’s only agricultural region, connecting the mining town of Narsaq to Igaliku, site of the medieval Norse cathedral Garðar. The route passes active sheep farms that have operated since Erik the Red’s time, with stone foundations from Viking longhouses visible in the fields. At Igaliku, you can walk among ruins of the bishop’s residence and cathedral where Greenlandic Norse Christianity flourished until the mysterious abandonment around 1400.
Easy driving on maintained gravel, suitable for any high-clearance vehicle. The real challenge is logistics – fuel up in Narsaq since there’s nothing until you return. Summer only (June-September) when ferry connections work and sheep farmers maintain the road. Camping allowed near the ruins with landowner permission. This is your only chance to drive to authentic Viking archaeological sites in Greenland, making it essential for anyone interested in Norse exploration history.
