George Washington National Forest Sherando Lake Fire Road Complex
Blue Ridge fire roads where Civil War armies marched
The fire road network around Sherando Lake winds through some of the most pristine backcountry in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, following old logging roads that Confederate and Union forces used during Sheridan’s Valley Campaign. The main route follows Forest Road 91 up White Rock Ridge, then connects to Forest Road 42 through Torry Ridge Gap—a technical climb over loose shale and embedded rock that’ll test your line choice and throttle control. The payoff comes at White Rock Falls overlook, where you can see across the Shenandoah Valley to Massanutten Mountain.
This is moderate 4WD territory requiring high clearance and some experience reading terrain, especially during wet conditions when the clay-based soil turns slick as grease. The network stays open year-round, but spring and fall offer the best combination of weather and scenery. No permits needed, but fuel up in Waynesboro—the nearest services are 20 miles from the trailhead. Multiple primitive camping spots exist along the ridgelines, making this perfect for a weekend basecamp setup to explore the dozens of interconnecting fire roads that spider through these ancient mountains.
