Hatfield-McCoy Rockhouse Trail System

Coal country's technical ridgeline challenge

Difficult

The Rockhouse Trail System cuts through the heart of coal country where strip mines carved terraces into ridge tops and hollow fills created new landscapes. Starting near Delbarton, the trail network spans over 200 miles of interconnected routes that climb from Logan County creek bottoms to exposed ridgelines with views across the Guyandotte River watershed. The signature Rockhouse section follows an old mining road to a natural sandstone shelter where bootleggers once hid stills, then drops through technical rock gardens and creek crossings that separate the weekend warriors from serious wheelers.

This is technical riding that demands high-clearance 4WD and solid skid plates — loose shale, exposed roots, and sudden elevation changes will punish stock vehicles. Summer brings humidity and thick mud after storms, while fall offers the best conditions with cooler temps and hardened trails. You’ll need a Hatfield-McCoy permit and insurance, plus fuel for the full loop since services are scattered. The reward is authentic Appalachian backcountry where coal heritage meets serious off-road challenge, far from the tourist crowds.
