Blueridge Parkway Rough Ridge Access Road
Backdoor to Blue Ridge Parkway's crown jewel
This unmarked access road splits off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Grandfather Mountain, dropping through a maze of boulders and exposed granite to reach Rough Ridge’s base. The route follows an old CCC maintenance road that was abandoned when the Parkway was completed, leaving behind a technical playground of rock steps and ledges. The final approach to the ridge proper requires picking your way through car-sized granite blocks that have tumbled from the cliffs above.
Plan on moderate 4WD skills and armor underneath — this isn’t a beginner’s route despite its short length. Summer brings crowds to the main Parkway, but this backdoor approach stays quiet. No camping allowed on National Park Service land, but dispersed sites exist on Forest Service property just south. The scramble to Rough Ridge’s summit reveals the same views that draw thousands to the official boardwalk, minus the company.
