Forest Service Road 475 Grandfather Mountain Circuit
Raw access to Grandfather's hidden backcountry.
Forest Service Road 475 cuts through the steep terrain below Grandfather Mountain’s famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, following old logging roads that hauled timber down these slopes in the 1930s. The route starts near the Blue Ridge Parkway and immediately drops into technical rock gardens and creek crossings, with the notorious “Devil’s Staircase” section challenging even experienced drivers with loose shale and exposed granite ledges.
This is expert-level terrain requiring full skid plates, rock sliders, and aggressive tread. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer thunderstorms can turn creek crossings dangerous fast. No permits needed, but dispersed camping is limited to designated areas only. What you get is raw Appalachian backcountry access and views of Grandfather’s cliffsides that day hikers never see.
