Pisgah National Forest Black Mountain Road
Remote Pisgah ridge runner with technical crossings
Forest Service Road 472 cuts through some of Pisgah’s most remote country, winding from US 276 near the Davidson River up to Black Mountain’s ridge line. This 12-mile technical route crosses three unnamed creeks that can turn nasty after heavy rains, with the steepest climb hitting you right after Big Creek Ford around mile 7. The road dead-ends at an old fire tower site with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge.
Moderate difficulty with a few expert-level sections during the creek crossings and rocky climbs. Stock 4WD with decent ground clearance will handle it, but skid plates aren’t a bad idea. Spring runoff makes this a summer-through-fall adventure. No permits needed, decent dispersed camping at the ridge, and you’ll lose cell service after mile 3. Fill up in Brevard — this is backcountry with no services.
